Germicidal UVC lamps are used in different types of UV air treatment systems such as installed in HVAC systems or in localized upper room disinfection units. UV lamps in HVAC systems can be installed to sterilize the air as it passes through the air ducts and can also sterilize equipment to prevent the buildup of mold and fungi on HVAC cooling coils.

Upper room ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) systems are also proven to be effective at eliminating airborne tuberculosis, with the CDC offering guidelines for the environmental control of tuberculosis with UVGI. Another method of UV air sterilization is with the use of UVC robots, which are gaining in popularity and can be deployed to sterilize air and surfaces in many environments.
