Ultraviolet germicidal light bulbs are widely used as an air, surface, and water sanitizer. UV germicidal light destroys the ability of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens to multiply by deactivating their reproductive capabilities. Germicidal light includes the UV-C portion of the ultraviolet spectrum with wavelengths between 100nm and 280nm. The target wavelength for optimal germicidal light bulb effectiveness is 253.7nm which defines the germicidal category. For water sanitation, ultraviolet germicidal lamps also emit ozone at 185nm.
Description
Working Principle
The lamp generates UV-C radiation through mercury vapor discharge inside a high-purity quartz envelope. At 253.7nm, that radiation penetrates microbial cell walls and damages nucleic acid structures, which is the mechanism engineers typically cite when specifying UV-C for HVAC or wastewater disinfection stages.
Advantages
Its extended length and higher wattage allow fewer lamps per installation run, which - practically speaking - cuts down on wiring complexity and maintenance points across a project. Quartz sleeves are compatible with standard reactor housings, so retrofits go faster. The lamp also tolerates a reasonably wide ambient temperature band, useful for outdoor or semi-conditioned equipment rooms.
